Questions

Common questions

Questions readers often ask about the book, the author, and the Dagara tradition.

What is The Healing Power of Animism about?

It is a guide to Dagara animism — the understanding that spirits are present in every animal and plant, every rock and element, and that by acknowledging and interacting with them we can find healing, guidance, and spiritual empowerment. Drawing on decades of practice with the Somé lineage of West African Dagara shamanism, the book explores the place of ancestors, animals, and dreams, the ritual structures of Dagara life, and animistic magic. The full publisher's description is on The Book page.

Is exploring and sharing these teachings a form of cultural appropriation?

To be answered by Mark, in his own words — a direct, honest response about how the teachings were received and the permission under which they are shared.

How did Mark come to study the Dagara tradition, and with whose blessing?

To be answered by Mark — the story of his apprenticeship and initiation with Martine Somé, and the lineage that authorized this work.

How does this book relate to the work of Malidoma Patrice Somé?

To be answered by Mark — he apprenticed with Martine Somé, sister of the author and teacher Malidoma Patrice Somé; Mark should describe that relationship as he wishes.

Is this the same as Mark's earlier book, Awakening Animism in the West?

To be answered by Mark — how this Bear & Company edition relates to his earlier work, and what, if anything, is new or revised.

Do I need to share these beliefs, or be on a spiritual path, to read the book?

To be answered by Mark — who the book is for, and what a reader new to animism can take from it.

Can I study or practice these teachings? Does Mark teach?

To be answered by Mark — whether and how he teaches, leads workshops, or takes students today.

When is the book published, and where can I order it?

The Healing Power of Animism publishes on January 5, 2027, from Bear & Company, an imprint of Inner Traditions. It can be pre-ordered now from the publisher and from Amazon — see the Pre-order section for current links.

Will there be an ebook or audiobook edition?
